Luxe Provence Launch Event Photos

March 16, 2015

It was a real night to remember for the Luxe Provence team. Our official launch event was filled with fabulous people, cuisine, wine,  and wonderful entertainment. Some planned like the raved about pianist performance by Jonathan Soucasse… and others by surprise, from Broadway singer and actress, Yvonne Over, from New York. What a delight.

A full night’s creative dînatoire was creatively prepared by Chef Steven Borishansky and his wonderful staff. Our photographer, Denis Dalmasso, documented the evening and we surprised our guests with their own portrait sessions. (Guests’ images from Denis, are IN folks...)

Menton Citrus Festival Inspired Fragrances

February 23, 2015
luxe-provence-menton-france

The 82nd Annual Menton Lemon Festival in in full flow so talking about citrus in perfumery seems timely. The festival has been officially marking (we hope) the farewell to winter since the end of the 19th century. For two weeks, the Biovès Garden in the centre of town is filled with large statues and figurines, all made from citrus fruit. Our Luxe Provence Fragrance Consultant, Rebecca Amer, offers us this round up inspired by the season.

Citrus is always an important and a key ingredient in masculines, colognes and chypres. That the rise of perfume in Europe from the 17th century dovetails with the discovery and use of citrus oils, is no coincidence.

Here are my top five lemon-centric fragrances:

1. Dior’s Eau de Sauvage. Indisputably classy and crisp with a mossy base. This masterpiece can be worn by a man or a woman but preferably with a white shirt on a hot day.

2. L’Artisan Parfumeur Thé Pour Un Eté, an icy glass of jasmin tea with ice and a slice…. very very light, more of a cologne than an Eau de toilette. Refreshing and pretty.

3. Annick Goutal Eau d’Hadrien, a citrus that takes you to the Mediterranean (wherever you may really be). Sparkling, dry and gives an icy cool effect. The soap is amazing too, if you indulge in luxury soaps, this one is worth it.

4. Atelier Cologne Cédrat Enivrant. I am cheating slightly as cédrat is a variant of lemon; it’s a bitter lemon. This niche line specializes in cologne so you’d expect excellence and it does not disappoint. Crushed lemons and a dash of lime, a few basil leaves and a hint of mint. This would be my top pick for a morning after the night before. Too much rosé last night? A jolt of Cédrat Enivrant and all in the world is well again. Very suave and may appeal to men more than women, I would wear it happily though.

5. Chanel Cristalle… I can’t leave this one off my list. She is a cool customer and a classically elegant, floral citrus that can be worn all year round. The Eau de Parfum is rounder and softer, fruity even, the sparkling and vibrant Eau de Toilette is my favourite of the two. Try them both! Somebody in the blogosphere described Cristalle as “an uptown girl” and I would say that’s quite right.

Hôtel de Gallifet Art, Jazz & Events

February 21, 2015
hotel gallifet aix-en-provence event

We are pleased to be back online, after well over a week of the worst “grippe ever”… Back to dreaming of spring and planning of my escape to the land of the living. Oh and what perfect timing, the Hôtel de Gallifet will be unwrapping a new exhibition, entitled “double décor” by Eléonore False and Ana Vega beginning this Friday, February 20th, 2015.

If you haven’t been, the Hôtel de Gallifet, is a stunning 18th century house located in the heart of the Mazarin district and was opened to the public in 2010 by Nicolas Mazet as a cultural, art and events venue.  This cultural center infuses its historic space with modern exhibitions, creative art workshops for children, jazzy art evenings (twice per month) and lovely outdoor garden events during the warmer months. We cannot wait until spring when the exquisite tree-lined garden space, just off the Cours Mirabeau, pops back to life, but in the meantime, we can equally enjoy the Gallifet’s exhibitions and music scene. The art “ateliers” for children are a great cultural addition and come highly recommended by a number of friends. Check their website to book, and for upcoming themes and dates.

In addition to all of these exciting activities, we here at Luxe Provence, are always on the lookout for the perfect Luxe event venues.  We are dreaming of creating our next special client event here at the Gallifet, especially well-suited if you are looking for a venue well located in Aix-en-Provence. Our Events Team is never short of fabulous ideas on just how to create a very special milestone celebration or launch, so just drop us a line and we can dream up something amazing, just for you at a venue like this.

Famille Sumeire Vignobles of Provence

February 20, 2015

The Sumeire Family has lived in Trets next to the Sainte Victoire since the 13th century. This local winemaking family owns three châteaux in Provence, the region where the first vines were planted in France: Château Maupague, Château Coussin, and Château l’Afrique. We caught up with Annabelle Sumeire recently to visit the property and learn more about the story of their wines including César, which was inspired by local artist, César Baldaccini (1 January 1921 in Marseille – 6 December 1998 in Paris), a noted French sculptor.

César created an original piece of artwork crafted out of the family’s existing wine labels that now hangs in the chateau and has been incorporated beautifully into the case artwork lending a true authenticity to this creation by vignoble, Olivier Sumeire.  The César red has won a silver medal at the “Concours des meilleures Syrahs du Monde 2013” and a star in the Guide Hachette 2014. The rosé offers a beautiful pale pink in color with a bluish highlight with an elegant nose of jasmin and wild rose.

vineyards-st-victoire

The Chateau Coussin estate is 120 hectares of vineyard planted in the Sainte Victoire Cotes de Provence sub-appellation and are composed of clay and limestone that are unique in their origin from ancient stony alluvial deposits from mountain torrents. Viticulture has been present in this area dating back 2,600 years ago to the ancient Greeks. While ancient traditions abound, the winery is a state of the art facility and every attention is given to preserving the bright and aromatic aspects of the spectacular fruit that Chateau Coussin produces. The Croix du Prieur label is the second wine of Chateau Coussin.

The Sumeire Famille wines have been receiving rave reviews for all three châteaux in Genuss magazine recently and a wider distribution in fine retail and restaurants in the US. Chateau Coussin’s 2013, for example, has been cited by Decanter magazine as ‘the perfect Provence Rosé’, once you’ve poured a glass of Chateau Coussin Rosé 2013, Cotes de Provence, France (£13, Oddbins) it won’t take much convincing that this wine is going to be utterly delicious. The colour is a pale, baby pink, the bouquet is rose and strawberry scented which leads to passion fruit and pink grapefruit flavours with an underlying minerality that adds freshness and elegance.

I think we’re ready for a glass …care to join us?

Luxe Provence Mimosa Notes

February 2, 2015
mimosa-lux-provence

We are so thrilled to have our very own, fabulous and passionate, Perfume Consultant here at Luxe Provence to share her expertise and tips with our readers and clients. Rebecca Amer, of Irridessence, hit the road with the Luxe Provence team last week to assist us in performing some seriously fun research here in Provence.  From Rebecca:

Inspired by our recent Luxe outing along the Mimosa Route I would like to speak a little about the actual scent of the mimosa flower and give a couple of recommendations for fragrances I admire that carry this note.

These vivid yellow mini pompoms of blossom have a distinctive olfactory footprint. To me they conjure up sweetness, powder, almonds and a hint of honey. A joyous, delectable smell that matches the look of them.

In perfumery the greenery is used along with the blossoms which gives a “green” facet and this balances the sweetness. Mimosa extraction is incredibly expensive and the absolute adds a luxurious touch to a composition.

If you have a sweet tooth, try Cinema (1) by Yves Saint Laurent. It is a sophisticated and elegant gourmand perfume which has the mimosa note. I love it and it’s been on my “to buy” list for a long while. The bottle is pretty too.

For an easy to wear, more casually elegant scent try l’Eau d’Hiver (2) by Frederic Malle. It’s light and pretty and was created by Jean Claude Ellena. Need I say more? I’m a fan.

Both of these perfumes are quite abstract, for something more literal you must try Mimosaique (3) by Patricia de Nicolaï. Stunningly pretty and realistic mimosa for those wanting a scent souvenir.

In closing here is advice for keeping cut mimosa that I found on Bois de Jasmin, one of my favourite perfume blogs:

Florist’s Tip: when you bring cut mimosa home, trim the ends and put the branches into boiling water. It’s best to do it in a heat-resistant container, and once the water cools, you can transfer the bouquet to a glass vase. My florist recommends repeating this hot water treatment every day while the mimosa is fresh; it forces the flowers to open up and release a strong burst of perfume. It really works!

Escape Along The Route of the Mimosas

January 30, 2015
luxe provence weekend escape

Every winter, I plan to set out on the Route du Mimosa to take in the gorgeous winter color that pops along the trail into the coastline of the Var. I am doing it this year, who wants to join? It sounds like the time is now and once there’s a pop of sun back on the agenda, I am hopping in the car to not only take in the mimosas, but also to head to Grasse, one of the premiere destinations in the world for luxury perfume production.

Between December and March, the mimosas bring brilliant yellow color along the turquoise coastlines through the Corniche des Maures massif of Tanneron, the Corniche de l’Esterel hills, and gardens throughout the valleys and hillsides which are covered with the fluffy, yellow flowers. The Route of Mimosas is 130 km of pure happiness between Bormes les Mimosas and Grasse (Maritime Alps).

luxe provence weekend escapes

Grasse, is also the home of perfume production in the region. Our Luxe Provence team is dying to sample the latest from Au Pays de la Fleur d’Oranger, often incorporating the floral note of the orange blossom into many of its products. The three fragrances in its Neroli Blanc collection are receiving great reviews here. I discovered my love of the orange blossom, via our delicious perfume consultant, Rebecca Amer of Irridescence, on one of her highly informative, fun and educational tours. I highly recommend her tours for yourself or a gift. Plus, their packaging and branding is simply Luxe Provence stunning.

So get out and enjoy smelling our winter flowers in bloom and in bottle…I am going to! And don’t forget to share your favorite discoveries with us here.

Provence’s Passionate Pianist Jonathan Soucasse

January 22, 2015
jonathan-soucasse-jazz-pianist-

Laura and I hit the streets scouting for local musical talent (such a good excuse) at the Hotel Gallifet, Maison d’Art et d’Histoire, in Aix-en-Provence last week and we certainly were not disappointed. Modern Jazz Pianist Jonathan Soucasse, offered us an intimate, passionate performance that was raw, awe-inspiring and fun. He blurs the lines between jazz, classic, contemporary and improvisation with amazing energy and talent. Jonathan achieved his diploma at the Conservatoire in Aix and plays for both private and larger venues.

His flamboyant energy, stage presence and talent to improvise is equally matched, to his raw musical abilities, what a pianist. From Chopin to Spears (Britney that is), we were simply delighted and excited…and refreshed. Beautifully, inspiring, playful.

This was a solo performance, but Jonathan is also 50 percent of the Duo Heiting, featuring an amazing sounding opera singer and we imagine that to be quite a spectacular performance to catch …for the next time.
