Artist Ced Vernay Exhibition at Luxe Hotel Dieu

June 25, 2015
ced-vernay-artist-exhibition

I was pleased to attend the opening of one of my favorite local artist’s exhibition, Ced Vernay, at the very luxe Intercontinental Marseille Hotel Dieu last evening. This was a landmark event for both the 5 star hotel and the french artist known for his modern interpretation of Pointilism, as the first artist to present their work in the hotel’s newly unveiled cultural and gallery space.

ced-vernay

Ced Vernay, The Pixal Artist

Ced Vernay is a photorealist painter and photographer born in Saint Etienne having lived for over 10 years in Brazil and has studied in the United States and Lyon. His confetti collage art pieces and modern pointillist paintings are fascinating to see in person from a distance, and at every angle. The expressions of his subjects are moving and realistic, several of which are celebrities, and all realized with great detail and patience. Sometimes each piece is reworked, possibly several times, until he achieves the precise artistic results he is satisfied with. I was fortunate to talk with Ced to learn more about his techniques and artistic inspiration behind his two most recent collections: Confetti Time and Homo Digitalis, which includes the obvious influencer, Chuck Close (Chuck Close is coming to Aix soon, too..).

I learned that we just so happen to share some of the same all-time favorite modern artists from Gerhard Richter to Gustav Klimt, the latter whom inspired him to create his beautiful painting homage to Klimt’s own Woman in Gold which is titled, Judith pixelisée Peinture à l’huile sur bois. The paintings and artwork must be seen in person to be truly appreciated. You will also notice his work popping up in restaurants and venues all over Aix and Marseille at the moment.

The Hotel Dieux Intercontinental Marseille

If you haven’t been yet, you must stop in for at least a cocktail or apero, to take in the fabulous views of the Vieux-Port and the Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica on a balmy Provence evening.

The 5 star hotel went through extensive architectural renovations to revitalize and transform the historic site into a gorgeous new destination for tourism and locals featuring 194 rooms and suites, a 1,000 m2 conference centre, a Spa by Clarins with an indoor pool, saunas and steam baths. The design and inspiration behind the new Intercontinental Marseille Hotel Dieu was to connect to its historic past by assuring a certain coherence with the original building, architecturally. The magnificent façades of Cassis and La Couronne stone with their effective colonnades, imbue the project with a spirit and provide a sense of identity.

The exhibition opened last night and runs for two months over the busy summer period. Take in the exhibition and be sure to enjoy a cool glass on the terrace for a picture perfect day or evening.

Savon de Marseille – Pure Luxe

June 14, 2015
luxe provence products

Marseille has been the home of the iconic natural soap, Savon de Marseille, for more than 800 years. Made from olive oil without preservatives or colorants, the real Savon de Marseille are made using traditional methods with oil from olives harvested in Provence, combined with natural ash derived from plants grown in saline environments in the Camargue. The ingredients are combined traditionally, boiled in ancient heavy cauldrons resulting in a beautifully local and pure luxe Provence product combining key natural elements from each corner of the region. Finally, enter the Mistral, the famously strong Provencal wind, which serves to dry the soaps in natural conditions.

savon de marseille official brands

The Savon de Marseille Label
Soap production has been a cornerstone in Marseille for hundreds of years, in part thanks to Louis XIV who decided to protect and regulate its quality production methods with an edict in 1688. The edict regulated the soap manufacturers and the ingredients, ensuring that the traditional methods were clearly followed and respected:

When manufacturing soap with saltwort, soda or ash, no fat, butter, or other materials may be used, but only pure olive oils, and without mixing in fat, under penalty of confiscation of goods‘.

This historical edict has recently been reinforced with a more formalized Regulatory Labeling condition passed just this June 2015, which offers certification and regulation comparable to an AOC label to producers who follow traditional practices, which up until recently, was largely lacking. Savon de Marseille has had a large resurgence in popularity worldwide since the 1980s, so it’s become crucial to develop a label that distinguishes the quality producers from the impostors, or inferior products. Lesser quality soaps claiming to be Savon de Marseille are often actually produced in other regions, or even other countries, using low quality ingredients, animal fats, and chemical additives.

So Who Are the Real Savonneries of Marseille?

As of this time of writing, there are actually only 4 true certified soapmakers who are entitled to use the official label designed by the UPSM which are: Marius Fabre,  Fer à ChevalLe Sérail and the Savonnoerie du Midi. So buyers beware, and try to steer towards those upholding its traditional quality standards and ingredients.

So what are those standards exactly? The new Label Savon de Marseille Garanti implies the following quality standards have been met:

  • Made in Marseille or immediate region
  • Fabricated by using ancient cauldrons with traditional methods
  • Exclusively use vegetal oils
  • Without perfumes, colorants or preservatives

Where to Find The Real Savon de Marseille?

For a pleasant shopping experience and simple way to find several of the brands in one place, stop into Places des Huiles in the view port of Marseille, where you can purchase only the real deal, plus discover some of the finest olive oils from the region.  I had a lovely visit with the owner, Frederick, who guided me through the history and recent label change laws, along with an olive oil tasting. Compliment your soap discovery experience by tasting one of the several fine Provence olive oils including black to green and from Les Baux to the Mediterranean sea.

Learn more about the Savonneries and for a break from the heat, or rainy day family friendly activity, try a tour of their soapmaking facilities.

Our Favorite Luxe Lavender Scents

June 11, 2015
provence lavender products

Our knowledgeable Perfume Consultant Rebecca Amer of Irridessence shares her favorite fragrances inspired by the in-season Provence bloom of the summer… why Lavender, of course.

Lavender can be a challenge due to its duel associations; firstly with soap/laundry and secondly with masculine smells like aftershave. My grandmother stored her linens with bunches of lavender and the sheets when I slept over at her house were gorgeously scented. Lavender sachets have the added benefit of warding away moths but beware the lavender sachets sold to tourists, they have a rough spikey smell that can be a complete turn off. Lavender has so many facets to it; fresh-sweet, herbal-floral and can be twisted this way and that. It’s dryness does lend itself well to masculines. In the right hands, or rather with the right nose, magic is made that matches the visual beauty of the iconic lavender fields of Provence.

provence-lavender-field-by-adi-bukman

The best, highest grade lavender comes from Haute Provence where it is a native plant. True lavender oil is steam distilled from the freshly cut flowering tops and stalks of Lavandula angustifolia. The Bulgarian and Spanish lavenders do not compare. So keep it Luxe, keep it sleek and dare to wear perfume with a lavender note.

lavender parfum

Here are my top six:

1.  Caron Pour un Homme… it may be “for a man” but I encourage all women to try it too. It’s a gorgeous mix of lavender and vanilla over amber. A classic.  – 125ml bottle for 75 €

2. Brin de Reglisse by Hermes, from the Hermessences collection. Lavender paired with liquorice. It’s said that Jean Claude Ellena was inspired to create this after walking through Provencal lavender fields. It has the inimitable Ellena touch (light as a feather and airy as the blue sky of summer). It’s delightfully unusual, the liquorice and lavender really work well together. Lasting power is an issue, so prepare to re-apply lavishly.  – 100ml bottle for 200€

3. Lavande Ombrée by Au Pays de La Fleur d’Oranger. This is a wonderfully smooth and elegant creature, very fine. Although I love the work of Jean Claude Gigodot initially I thought it wouldn’t be wearable for me, now I have decided its a keeper as the rose note makes it work. In fact I am wearing it tonight. It conjures up leather gloves in my mind and when I checked the notes on Fragantica, leather is listed, so voila! If you like soft leather in perfume it’s a must try.  – 125ml bottle for 114 €

4. Gris Clair by Serge Lutens, gentle lavender with smoke and a cold effect. A good antidote to the hot weather we are having at the moment.  – 50ml bottle for 90 €

5. Caldey Island, straight up lavender with a musky finish. The great perfume critic Luca Turin rates this very highly and it’s a steal. A more local option in the same vein is Molinard’s Lavande, from Grasse.   – 100ml bottle for £ 23 (UK) for Caldey Island; 100ml bottle for 39€ for Lavande

6. Jicky by Guerlain, created in 1889 this is heritage lavender for the perfumista, classical and timeless, do please try it in extrait (the perfume concentration). Expensive but if you love it, it will be well worth it.  – 30ml bottle for 291 €

iris of provence

Go out, find them… fields are in bloom all across Provence, especially around Trets, where the 2ème Journée de l’Iris was just held, a celebration and discovery around the production and harvesting of Provencal irises by the coopérative les Aromates de Provence (CAPOMIVAR). On the Route de Rousset and between Fuveau, Rousset and Trets, you will certainly catch a glimpse.

A feature on the iris harvests is here, but for now, be inspired and hit the roads… as Theo Van Gogh said “The Irises are a beautiful study full of air and life…” captured oh so beautifully by his famous artist brother during his stay in Saint Rémy de Provence (image shown).
