Behind the Weave: Brun de Vian Tiran – Luxe Artisanal Textiles

March 2, 2017

I had the pleasure of going behind-the-scenes of the meticulously-crafted textiles of Brun de Vian Tiran, a prestige, family-run Provence manufacturer since 1806. My fabulous and educational tour was led by Pierre Darlay at their manufacturing facilities. Since its inception, this father and son, family-run business has been located right in the center ville of Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, which has a long history of working with silk and wool.
isle-sur-la-sorgue

Isle-sur-la-Sorgue wisely made use of its many natural resources, its abundant water derived from the Sorgue River, local wool, teasels, dyer’s madder, olive oil and more. The city’s inhabitants cleverly developed industrial machinery driven by water wheels – there used to be up to 66! – fueling mills, spinning machines, and later mechanical looms. Today, you can still see the water wheels throughout the town adding a certain authenticity to this beautiful, antique-lovers city.

In 1808, a father, Charles Tiran, and son-in-law, Laurent Vian, partnership took advantage of this ideal environment favorable to the textile industry and set up a mill on the banks of the Sorgue River to create woolen cloth and blankets. In 1886, the marriage of a Vian’s grand-daughter to Emile Brun, completed the name and lineage the factory proudly bears today, Brun de Vian-Tiran. In 1900, Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, boasted five complete factories and many smaller, more specialized workshops dedicated to producing wool blankets, carpets, garment cloth and specialized fabrics for the paper industry.

MERINO WOOL OF PROVENCE

But one day, Brun de Vian-Tiran dreamed of traveling in time, back to earlier days and local traditions. After 7 years of research and analyses, and with the help of his wool merchant friend Claude Gutapfel, Pierre Brun identified the first local Provence sheep breeder who had kept the rare merino breed genes intact.

Today, fifteen sheep breeders manage flocks whose wool is certified with the appellation “Mérinos d’Arles Antique®”, a fleece which is not just the finest – with a diameter of less than 20 microns – but the softest in Europe. Their 100% Mérinos d’Arles Antique® collection, called “Camargue”, has given its true place to this noble wool, part of France’s cultural and historical inheritance and is featured in this curation. Its outstanding fineness is equal to that of Iranian Cashmere.

Over one hundred years later, only Brun de Vian-Tiran is continuing its activity, perpetuating a unique and continuous manufacturing tradition which 8 generations have nurtured and perfected. I personally set-out to honor and put forward the quality brands that continue to develop their craft here in Provence each season. I am proud to include a very special ethically-made item made from their Antique Mérino Wool of Arles in this season’s SOLD-OUT V7: The Camargue Collection Luxe Provence Box.

Luxe Provence Southern Rhône Wine Guide

November 22, 2016

Thanksgiving is the American holiday of gratitude and appreciation. It’s a time to honor the abundance of harvest and enjoy traditional foods with family and friends. It’s a nod to lineages and settlers, to those that planted the bounty that is enjoyed on harvest tables around the country.

Though the holiday is distinctly American, the essence of the day reflects values practiced around the globe: gratitude, family and gracious mealtimes. Here in Provence, these values are ancestral and instinctive. The slower pace of fall in Provence welcomes visitors from around the world and in many ways mirrors the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday.

The wines of the Southern Rhône Valley from Chateâuneuf-du-Pape and its neighbors Rasteau, Vacqueyras, Tavel and Gigondas are exceptionally food-friendly. These regions create wine blends (rather than single varietals), producing a merge of flavors and characteristics just right for the Thanksgiving meal which is served in one feast, rather than in courses. Red, white and rosè wines of high-quality and distinct heritage come from this part of France, and offer an exciting slate of aromatics and personalities.

vineyards-of-provence-wine-guide-thanksgiving

Here is our Luxe Provence Thanksgiving Wine Guide, with wine recommendations and pairing suggestions.

Domaine Saint Alimant Rasteau 2014

François REY and her family have cultivated vines in Rasteau for generations at Domaine Saint Alimant which is located just north of Orange. In Rasteau, south-facing vineyards mean protection from the Mistral winds and diverse soils elicit richness. This wine is 50% Grenache and 50% Syrah with a blackfruit and earthy nose. Substantial tannins balanced by fruit make this a paring for lamb, cheese and Provençal cuisine; think Herbs de Provence seasonings on the Thanksgiving turkey or stuffing.

MonTirius Vacqueyras Minéral 2008

MonTirius owners Christine and Eric SAUREL and their daughter Manon create all of their wines biodynamically and are exceptionally respectful of their vineyards, soil and environment. They also produce beautiful wines with a fresh vibrancy. A white wine from Vacqueyras is extraordinary (95% of production is red) and this White Grenache, Roussanne and Bourboulenc blend is very enticing. This wine ages well and compliments roasted vegetable and potato dishes. An excellent partner for roasted turkey or chicken.

Domaine Grand Veneur “Les Origines” Chateâuneuf-du-Pape 2014

Domaine Grand Veneur comes from the Alain Jaume family, a landmark producer in the southern Rhône Valley. Expect high-quality and great taste from the Jaume portfolio. Inspired by food and family, their tasting room in Orange offers the opportunity to enjoy a Provençal meal paired with a selected scope of their wines. “Les Origines” is a medium-to-full -bodied wine that offers the slightest touch of sweetness along with the blackfruit and herbal tones. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre come together in this wine and would pair very well with spiced turkey, a sausage stuffing or even a dark-chocolate dessert.

gigondas chateau aqueria wine tavel

Château d’Aqueria Tavel 2015

Tavel wines come in one color: rosé. Deeper in tone than the paler Côtes de Provence wines, Tavel delivers more fullness, more fruit richness and the ability to age. Château d’Aqueria is a beautiful estate situated around an ancient château, which is an unexpected treasure in the Rhône Valley. The Oivier family has guided the estate for three generations, and they produce high-quality wine of great acclaim. This bottle has white fruit characteristics and a long finish. The freshness of this wine makes it perfect to welcome holiday guests as the meal finishes off in the oven. It also has the depth to pair with the feast, substantial enough for nearly all harvest foods.

gigondas-pierre-amadieu

Pierre Amadieu Gigondas Le Pas de L’Aigle 2012

Old vine Grenache and Syrah grown at an altitude of 400 meters gather freshness and complexity for this stunning wine. The Pierre Amandieu team hand-selects the grapes that go into this bottle to deliver exceptional quality. Complex aromatics of fig and blackberry show intensity, and pepper-spice flavors elicit a bit of herbal manliness. This is wine for a sparkling decanter, a chance to serve the best to your treasured Thanksgiving guests. This wine is drinking now, but can be held for a decade, so get a bottle for the meal and a bottle for the cellar. Rich sausage stuffing and mushroom side dishes will partner well with this wine, but the nature of the Grenache offers flexibility for the full feast.

top-thanksgiving-wines-of-provence

All of these wines are available for under $50 (some significantly under) and are available online for US delivery. For visitors and expats in Provence, most offer cellar door tasting and sales. As well as being affordable and accessible, each wine is made by local families and exhibits exceptional quality.

Luxe Provence has curated this list to illustrate the best for your family from southern Rhône winemaking families.

Auberge La Fenière – The Tastes of Provence

October 18, 2016

I recently attended a fabulous gastronomic event at Auberge La Fenière in Cadenet, just near the picturesque Provence village of Lourmarin. It was a fabulous day, well organized and inspired me to share their great local recipe for Boullabaisse. Timed just perfectly for our Luxe Provence Box clients who just received organic saffron in their Autumn curation.

Surrounded by gardens and vineyards, this family-run auberge, in a stone farmhouse and its outbuildings, is 1.8 km from Lourmarin village and 10.4 km from the former Cistercian monastery of Abbaye de Silvacane. A great central spot to stay to explore the villages of the Luberon.

auberge-feneire-samutfamille

The restaurant is run by the well-regarded culinary family, the Sammuts. The mother-daughter chef duo begins with Reine Sammut, a distinguished Michelin star “toque” working meticulously for over forty years in Provence. Together with her daugher, Nadia Sammut, they have opened the first gourmet 100% gluten-free restaurant in France. “It took us a year of work to transform the recipes developed for years by my mother. But since the month of February, we went to a kitchen completely free of gluten”,  says Nadia Sammut. For Nadia as a young woman, a switch to a diet without gluten or lactose was not merely a trend following choice, but rather an ordeal. “Thirty-five years ago, doctors did not know celiac disease which is an intolerance to gluten”, she says. Its growth is delayed. At 29, she was hospitalized and “doctors told me I destroyed my immune system, I was at the peak of the disease”. Nadia was bedridden for two years before discovering the cause of her disease was gluten.

famille-sammut

The talented mother and daugher duo have now teamed up to create one an innovative gluten-free restaurant at the Auberge featuring produce from the property’s organic garden. The family, along with papa’s lead, works to source the highest quality local ingredients from top producers, from fresh sustainable fish to high-quality, organic meats. The Auberge also offers gluten-free gourmet cooking classes in it’s gorgeous on-site kitchen for both adults and children. My 7-year old adored his class during the festival and created some truly delicious gluten-free sweet and savory cookies, salads and more, all in just over an hour.

During the Gastronomy Festival, the Auberge brought in a number of local producers that they routinely work with whom also offered up a variety of accessibly priced lunch plates for visitors during the day. That evening, Reine Sammut hosted a fabulous 4-course dinner gala at her prestigious restaurant to culminate a beautiful culinary day in Provence. I am pleased to share this Bouillabaisse Recipe from Martigues, that was published that day.Bouillabaisse is a quintessential and classic Marseille dish and we are featuring this recipe featured at the Auberge with a spin on higher-grade seafood. Luxe Provence Box clients can put your new saffron to work!

saffron-of-provence

First, up, what on earth did this name come from? A bit of history to start:
Quand ca bout, baisse le feu = when it boils, turn down the heat… ou bouille et baisse.

Bouillabaisse was originally a stew made by Marseille fishermen of Provence using the bony rockfish which they were unable to sell to restaurants or markets. There are at least three kinds of fish in a traditional bouillabaisse: typically red rascasse (Scorpaena scrofa); sea robin (fr:grondin); and European conger (fr: congre).

bouillabaisse

It can also include gilt-head bream (fr: dorade); turbot; monkfish (fr: lotte or baudroie); mullet; or European hake (fr: merlan). It usually also includes shellfish and other seafood such as sea urchins (fr: oursins), mussels (fr: moules);velvet crabs (fr: étrilles); spider crab (fr: araignées de mer) or octopus. More expensive versions may add langoustine (European lobster), though this was not part of the traditional dish made by Marseille fishermen. Vegetables such as leeks, onions, tomatoes, celery, and potatoes are simmered together with the broth and served with the fish. The broth is traditionally served with a rouille, a mayonnaise made of olive oil, garlic, saffron, and cayenne pepper on grilled slices of bread.

What makes a bouillabaisse different from other fish soups is the selection of Provençal herbs and spices in the broth; namely the saffron. Also, the use of bony local Mediterranean fish, the way the fish are added one at a time, and brought to a boil; and the method of serving. In Marseille, the broth is served first in a soup plate with slices of bread and rouille, then the fish is served separately on a large platter or, more simply, as Julia Child suggests, the fish and broth are brought to the table separately and served together in large soup plates. [Source: Wikipedia]

Without further ado, here’s the recipe, courtesy of La Fenere who featured a version featuring more noble local fish from the Martique area.

Just 25km northwest of Nimes (another stunning place to visit for Roman culture, more on that later…) through blossoming sunflower fields and vines is the quaint little ville of Uzès. The town comes to life with its colorful markets twice a week, and offers lovely shopping and a tad more authenticity than some of the other better known market cities in Provence. There are lovely plazas and quaint pedestrian rues dotted with outdoor restaurants, charming boutiques, epiceries, and cafes to keep you adequately busy exploring for an afternoon.

Rencontres Arles

August 3, 2016

The 47th Annual Rencontres d’Arles is underway and what better excuse to visit this beautiful and historically-rich Provence city than now. The Rencontres Festival plays an active role in revealing trends, talents and supporting artists through dozens of galleries set up in its historic Roman buildings and museums each year.

Discover street photography and Western classics featuring French cult figure, Johnny Hallyday, bounding about in the Camargue, along with visual themes tackling today’s difficult social and political issues as: dictatorships, abortion and misogyny and difficult lives of transvestites… to the collision of African and European cultures. There is something for everyone to appreciate this year. I particularly enjoy that the city’s classic Roman architecture and history as a backdrop to a curation of modern images supporting a variety of visual storytelling styles, along with side streets and smaller galleries that are brimming with “off” image photographers tacked about.

cloite-sainte-arles
Arles of course, has some impressive Roman monuments, of which the earliest – the arena, the Roman theatre and the cryptoporticus, date back to the 1st century B.C. During the 4th century Arles experienced a second golden age, as attested by the baths of Constantine and the necropolis of Alyscamps. In the 11th and 12th centuries, Arles once again became one of the most attractive cities in the Mediterranean. The Saint-Trophime (shown above), with its cloister, is one of Provence’s major Romanesque monuments and has recently been restored and serves as one of the venues.

As part of the celebration, the local museums offer free admission or discounted rates with your festival ticket or pass, which makes Arles an ideal weekend destination as there is much to see. Be sure to visit the Musée Réattu to appreciate Katerina Jebb’s creative world of sensual textiles, materials and color together in a glorious symphony that pose interesting questions on the definition of beauty. Jebb worked closely with Arles famous couturier, Christian Lacroix, whose creative vision is behind the museum’s exhibition space.
